Most of us started drinking milk at an early age and grew up without questioning its so-called benefits. But the biggest milk companies haven’t been completely honest with us. Through a series of sly marketing and advertising ploys, they have successfully convinced many generations that cow’s milk and everything created from it is the purest and most nutritious source of calcium.
But recent studies have found the truth: milk is not as healthy as you think.
The concept that milk does wonders for your bones is debatable, to say the least. Believe it or not, there is no substantial evidence of milk consumption strengthening bones. On the contrary, mountains of independent research revealed that milk can be detrimental to health.
The dairy industry has always remained adamant in its claim that the milk of calcium prevents bone fractures and staves off osteoporosis. But it has been revealed that a high dairy intake is not only unnecessary but could also have disastrous results. People who are well into their 50’s who take calcium supplements and consume more dairy products really don’t have a lot to gain when it comes to bone health. People who consume copious amounts of calcium in their youth are just as susceptible to bone-related problems as those who don’t.
It seems like the government has decided to look the other way, allowing dairy companies to peddle misinformation about their products.
A few studies may have found that a diet rich in calcium can lead to denser bones, but it doesn’t affect one’s risk of experiencing a fracture. Moreover. the basic assumption that high calcium intake prevents fractures is not based on any clinical trial evidence. On the other hand, excessive calcium has been linked to gastrointestinal issues and can accumulate in arteries and kidneys, thus increasing your risk of heart disease and developing kidney stones.
It’s also worth noting that dairy products, in general, are acid-forming. A 3.5 ounce serving of skim or whole milk only puts a neglectable acid load, which is 1/1,000 of an equivalent on the kidneys, but the numbers can add up, especially if your diet is full of dairy. If you eat a diet full of acid-forming foods, your alkali reserves will be depleted and you could end up with acid buildup. This will then trigger a series of physiological processes to neutralise the acid primarily via your skin, lungs, and kidneys.
Unfortunately, the kidneys are only able to eliminate a few solid acids, so a consistent over-consumption of acid-forming foods such as milk and cheese is sure to cause acidosis and disrupt your cell’s normal functioning. If left untreated, this can drastically increase your susceptibility to a range of serious health problems, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. Basically, milk can cause bone health problems.
Instead of grabbing a carton of milk when you buy groceries, just add more superfoods to your diet. Always stock up on alkaline-forming foods. I recommend a diet that includes only 15-20% of acidic foods and 80-85% alkaline-forming superfoods. Good thing almost all fruits and vegetables do not cause acid buildup.
