Fear is not always a bad thing. In the right doses, it can inspire, motivate, and make you stronger. But if you allow your deepest, darkest fears to have a firm grip on you every single day, they will keep you from living your life to the fullest.
Fear is essentially False Evidence Appearing Real and it’s the foundation of your limiting beliefs. Don’t allow yourself to be driven by it and create self-restricting boundaries; face your fear head-on and achieve self-empowerment by taking these four steps.
- Acknowledge that everyone has fears. Whatever your fear is, know that you are not alone. Everyone is afraid of something. No matter what your fear is, you should not feel isolated. If you ask your friends, family and colleagues, you might even find out that your anxiety and hesitation are driven by the same thing. Understand this and let it empower you to take the next step.
- Don’t let your imagination control you. Your imagination is responsible for most of your fears. In fact, some people have such a negative imagination that it keeps them from taking a step outside of their comfort zone. They come up with all sorts of scenarios to justify their fears and reinforce their negative sentiments. Let’s face it – letting your imagination fuel your fear only keeps you from making the most of your life. Your fear of the unknown has less to do with reality and more to do with your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to take risks and face your fears head-on. Let your imagination run freely, but be in control. Don’t let it stop you from pursuing a life unhindered by fear.
- See your fears as opportunities to grow. Overcoming fear is more difficult if you keep looking at it from a negative viewpoint. To overcome your fears, you must not dwell on defeatist thoughts. Approach each and every fear as an opportunity to become a better version of yourself. Look beyond your fears and envision the great things that will happen once you overcome them.Focusing too much on your fears will only reinforce them. You have to see them as an opportunity for you to learn and grow. Realise the benefits of overcoming them, so you can learn to let go of them and steer your life in the right direction.
- Take it slow. Don’t be pressured into overcoming all your fears in one fell swoop. Getting over a fear – no matter how minor and insignificant may seem – is not something that happens overnight. The process takes time, and you have to start small. Instead of taking drastic action to eliminate your biggest, perennial fear, take one small step at a time. Ease your way into it and find small ways to challenge yourself.
Take these steps and overcome your fear. Become empowered to achieve your true potential and making the most of every day.
